| On Saturdays, we usually do 45-50 miles in about 21/2-3 hours. One of the preferred routes is a loop through the Great Swamp Refuge outside of Morristown. This is flat to rolling terrain. In racing season (March-September), a lot of the club members who race are at the races. There is, however, a good core group of club members who don't race and organize our Saturday morning ride. The riders meet at Montclair Bikery shop on Valley Rd. at 7:30am and roll by 7:45am. In prime racing season (June-August) when everyone is pretty fit, parts of the ride can be fast. We do an 20-30 minute interval through the swamp at 24-28mph. Sometimes, the group does split up in this section. Riders will need to be ready to draft tightly on a wheel. We do regroup at the end of it, then go a little easier on the way home.

| So the Saturday ride is better than Sunday for newbies to begin riding with your group?

Saturday is better. Sunday is an advanced riders day with a fast pace and an ambitious route. In reference to BOTH days, however, you should be aware of whether or not the team is racing (check this same forum.) This Saturday, for example, many of us were at the state road race championships, while two others were in Louisville for the National Masters Championships. And on Sunday, others attended the Flanders time trail, and coupled with the fact that some of those who attended had ridden a road race on Saturday, the pace was deliberately relaxed over a only 48 miles.
In other words, both weekend rides may vary according to the racing schedule.
You should also know that new riders like you are always not only welcome, but appreciated.

| Thank you for the positive sentiment, Barry. And please; another "diatribe!" You haven't posted since the 14th!

Guest, hope you join the forum and join us for a ride! Yes, Saturday is the ride we like to invite new/potential members out on. Glad you are enjoying Barry's posts, but riding with him is even better. He will keep you laughing even as you are gritting your teeth in an effort.
If you are thinking of Sunday, the rides are the best fit for riders who are already able to ride 70-90 miles at a 20+ mph pace, draft and paceline comfortably.
Thanks.
Elaine
