HI Everyone,

In addition to being an area rich in American History, Louisville, Kentucky is also the site for this year's Masters National Championships, where John Autore, Nate Morgenstern and yours truly are competing.

John and Nate competed in their respective road races on Monday and I just finished my time trial. John will compete on Friday in the criterium while Nate and I head home tomorrow. Good luck John!!! Show them that killer sprint!

The road race course here in Cherokee Park is a 5 mile lap of twists and turns and short steep climbs and windy descents. As John remarked, you can't even recover on the descents after a climb because you have to work them also!

John hung tough in the 65+ men's road race like the champion that he is, staying with the main pack for the first four laps, getting dropped and then digging his way back in for another lap before getting dropped on the final lap of a 7 seven lap race. He crossed the line with that Ivan Basso smile that he gets when he is going all out. Great job John!

Nate had a much better experience in his 55+ road race over last year's knock out on the first lap. Imagine how relieved I was as he came through the start-finish area in the main pack on the second lap! On lap three the contenders went for a break on Dog Hill and Nate was too far back in the pack to respond. The break of six gradually got away while Nate's group whittled down to 11. On the eighth and final lap, he hung with the pack but then cramped on the final climb into the finish and crossed in the back for a respectable 17th place. Nice finish Nate! (We had an issue with his number being mis-read by the refs and him getting a DNF; when we showed the head ref his jersey, the guy remembered seeing him in the pack and therefore, put him in the correct spot. That orange really stands out!)

Today's TT was windy and hilly; I hung in for 18th place out of 22 in the women's 40-44, which is an improvement over last year, where I only beat one person!

All I can say is that it is truly an inspiration to see so many 'Masters'- people our age on up, as old as 82 years, in great shape and competing at this level. The individual who won John's 65+ race, Franz Hammer, took his 36th National title after soloing away from the pack to the line. In Nate's race, the likes of Kent Bostick, Wayne Stetina and David Leduc, who were three of the 6-man break, continue to dominate that field for multiple national titles. Bostick and Stetina, who are teammates, attacked and countered along with a third teammate Doughty in a successful effort to get away from Leduc, the sprinter of the group. The attacks came at the start of the final lap, and Stetina stayed away the entire lap (5 miles!) forcing Leduc to settle for second place with Doughty taking third and Bostick fourth. It was excellent teamwork and a real display of power and experience.

Other notable performances are Betty Tyrell's 34th National Title, earned in the women's 55-59 road race on Monday (all three of us were there to cheer her on!) and Ann-Marie Miller's first place in the women's 50-54 road race.

Herb's road race yesterday had an unfortunate ending when the 6-man break was led off course by the pace motorcycle in the final lap, so that none of those men crossed the finish. We watched as the head referee poured over the rule book, scratching his head and wondering why he had chosen this occupation.

Off the racecourse, I visited a historic plantation outside of Louisville that has the distinction of being the place where Abraham Lincoln, in the 1830s as a young man staying with friends, first experienced slavery in all of its horror, and is believed to be the inspiration behind his drive to end slavery for good.

Happy cycling and we will see you all soon!
Cyndi

Yes, my race was quite chaotic, some made a wrong turn at the end and then the pile up at the finish. There's a PIC on the USA Cycling web site of me crossing the line and a group of riders behind me all over ground, one bike still in the air... WILD!

Just over 100 riders took to the line in the 40-44 men’s road race making it the largest field of the competition. Mid-way through the 10-lap affair four riders, Roger Aspholm (Haworth, N.J./Westwood Velo), Nico Toutenhoofd (Boulder, Colo./Excelsports.com), David Harward (South Jordan, Utah/Porcupine-Specialized Racing) and David Henderson (Columbia, Mo.) were able to gain time on the field. As the contest moved into the final laps, a small group of chasers formed including Craig Romer (St. Helena, Calif./Team Specialized Racing), Stephen Spanbauer (Louisville, Ky./Calistoga Racing), Stephen Ferretti (Crestline, Calif./Sho-air-Sonace) and Daniel Casper (Northfield, Minn./Grandstay Hotels). They began slowly closing the gap but were unable to catch the leaders until some confusion ensued with the front group missing the turn into the finish. Tootenhoofd and Harward were able to quickly get turned around, but the chase group was surging. In the kick to the line Romer, Casper and Ferretti grabbed the medals in one of the event’s most interesting finishes. An officials’ jury was quickly formed and after thorough investigation, the results were deemed to stand as each rider crossed the line. Herb Jimenez (Montcliar, New Jersey/JIMENEZ Velo Sport) crossed in 27th place.

Everyone told me the course was very hilly but when you do all the climbs in your big ring it's not a hill course. It definitely was very very technical and super fast - but definitely not a climbers course. Nationals at Seven Spring resort in PA. a few years ago... that was a real course for a "road" national championship with a six mile climb. But all in all, it was still a good nationals. CONGRATULATIONS to the locals that competed... Johnny A, Nate... Who esle?

Barry, YES, were you ever!! You did us proud as you moved around at will in the 44 lap crit. To nearly the end of the race you were looking fresh and ready to pounce on your prey. With one to go the pace became ballistic and you too looked like a missile!! Great riding to a 12th place finish in the 65+ Nationals crit. YOU'RE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barry is a Montclair ICON, I've always said this. Someone ought to make a documentary of Young Nazarian.

I have the TITLE. "A man, a legend, a way of life"
(YOUNG NAZARIAN - Simply served into the heat of the furnace of afflliction that has produced nothing but absolute refinement, just like GOLD!)

BTW, how's that elbow?

Dear Johnny A. and Herb, Thanks much, but they're still timing my sprint with a sun dial.  And what John DIDN'T write was that he went light-headed during a race in which he had already beat last year's national champ and had to withdraw.   After which, with coloring ressembling new fallen snow, he yelled me on during every lap. AND TOMORROW NIGHT many of us will go to Augusta to see John win the racing series for THE 45+, a feat by a man qualified for the 65+, and one I believe is unprecidented.

Next year, I hope to pull myself to a respectable top ten in the national crit championships as John jumps out during the sprint for a podium finish.

Maybe that remarkably attractive racer in the women's 45+ will also be in attendance. And maybe she still will not have found out that I'm not really the vice-president of Trek.
